Stepper recognized for a design first

Every year Dec. 3 is celebrated around the world as International Day of Persons with Disabilities to recognize the unique gifts and contributions of these individuals to society.

The celebrations extended to Calgary every year as well and this year they included three flash mob performances representing diverse disabilities, in conjunction with the City of Calgary’s Advisory Committee on Accessibility along with the community.

NOWHERE TO RENT

As both Calgary’s and Alberta’s economies continue to thrive, rental vacancies are showing decreased numbers compared to last year.

According to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), the apartment vacancy rate decreased in Calgary’s Census Metropolitan Area to 1.3 per cent this October compared to 1.9 per cent in October of 2011. Across urban centres in Alberta, the average vacancy rate for “privately- initiated” rental apartments in Alberta’s urban centres declined to two per cent in October 2012, down from 3.4 per cent last year.

Cold Lake homebuilders on record pace trying to meet demand

EDMONTON – Cold Lake may not have a hospitable name, but Nicole Mansfield warmed to it almost instantly three years ago after her husband’s struggles as a Newfoundland fisherman prompted a move.

Deciding to trade cod for crude, the family of four packed up their $30,000 home on the Atlantic coast and headed to northeastern Alberta, where her husband found work in the oilfield services sector. The decision has resulted in a dramatic improvement in the Mansfields’ income, yet the family soon ran into a new and unexpected financial hassle — finding an affordable place to live.

Holiday drug bust

Police officers made a small dint in the drug trafficking trade on Lethbridge streets during December but the battle is far from over.

“As soon as we remove them someone else is going to come in a fill that void. What is helping is the intelligence and information sharing between agencies,” Staff Sgt. Wes Houston of ALERT’s Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit (CFSEU)-Lethbridge, told media Thursday afternoon.
