Long-awaited cancer clinic to be built at Foothills Medical Centre: sources

Premier Alison Redford will announce a long-awaited new Calgary cancer clinic at a news conference Friday morning, government sources say.

The clinic will be on the site of the Foothills Medical Centre. It’s to be a multi-year project with planning to begin soon. Funds for the planning stage could be in the March 7 budget.

Three commercial projects among building permits in January

Commercial development accounted for about one-third of the value of construction permitted in January, according to month-end figures issued by the town.

Permits were issued for three commercial construction projects. The permit for a change in use and renovations for Hot Yoga Studio to locate in the neighbourhood mall at 117 Lakeway Blvd. was valued at $264,000. Tenant improvements were permitted for Prairie Dawgs in Hewlett Park Landing valued at $189,600 and for Liberty Tax Service in Ryders Square valued at $77,600.

Wireless industry promises to consult on cellphone towers

The lobby group that represents Canada’s wireless industry says cellphone service providers will start consulting more with homeowners and municipalities about the placement of cellphone towers in Canadian cities.

The Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association announced Thursday a new plan to work closely with municipalities to “find common-sense solutions to the challenge of building Canada’s digital infrastructure while respecting local land use preferences and community concerns.”

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. is making no apologies over its tactic of not disclosing a house has been repossessed when it puts the home back on the market.

The Crown corporation says it is acting like any other seller — just trying to get the best offer it can. Critics charge CMHC should disclose more information, given its role as Canada’s national housing agency.

More controversy from Forest Ridge

Tuesday’s city council meeting proved to be a controversial one, as members of the public came in droves to oppose a residential development proposal.

Council had two subdivision proposals to vote on in the Forest Ridge area of Westpark.

The first went off without a hitch, as no community members showed up to oppose the proposal, leading to a unanimous vote from council to approve the developer’s plan.

City scales back area for downtown levy

City administrators have scaled back the boundaries for the downtown community revitalization levy, a key funding mechanism for the proposed downtown arena.

After consulting with provincial officials, the city removed several blocks centred around 101st Street and Jasper Avenue, an area already built up with office towers. The change scales back their high-end projections of what would be collected under the levy over its 20-year life from $1.6 billion to $1.1 billion.

$252 Million Into Calgary Communities

Part of an ongoing community investment fund that will invest $252 million from 2012 to 2016, the second round of The City of Calgary’s 2012 Capital Conservation Grants saw over $1.6 million allocated to 46 community associations and social recreation organizations to support more than 80 projects around the city.

Internet remains uncharted territory for Alberta businesses: RBC

CALGARY — The Internet remains uncharted territory for Alberta small businesses with less than half of them having a dedicated website, says a survey by RBC.

The survey said 43 per cent of small business owners in the province have a dedicated website; 47 per cent of those businesses say they sell their products and services through their websites; and 40 per cent of entrepreneurs in Alberta say that they use social media to promote their business.
