White: Cities must evolve to capitalize on new opportunities

Cities are always evolving, adapting to new economic and market realities. One of the more interesting new evolutionary developments in city building is the conversion of old suburban shopping malls into mixed-use urban villages or cities. The goal: to add density to the suburbs by transforming under-performing malls into a mix of different uses with residential towers as the anchor, not department stores. No longer will everyone drive to the mall. In these new mall cities, most will walk the shops that will be in their backyard, so to speak.
