Paula Simons: Selling off a little bit of history might help McKay Avenue School save itself

Last year, Edmonton city council agreed to designate the McKay Avenue School site as a Municipal Historic Resource. It was welcome move, since the majestic 1905 brick structure, which now serves as a museum and archives for the Edmonton Public School District, and the little 1881 original wooden school house beside it, are two of this city’s most important heritage assets. The designation was timely, too, since it triggered a municipal grant of $300,000 towards the cost of repairing the brick building’s failing roof.
