Fines for false fire alarms to triple in 2013

EDMONTON – Years before he became Edmonton’s fire marshal, Tom Karpa was fielding 911 calls one night when a woman called to complain that her apartment building was shaking.

“Shaking?” Karpa asked. He walked her through a gamut of possibilities, and finally sent out firefighters. They had just pulled up to the scene when she called back.

Fire training facility gets go ahead

The last piece of the Westgate Fire Station, a new training facility, is going ahead after city council’s Protective Services Committee approved the $220,500 tender plus $14,500 in auxiliary costs for engineering, inspection and contingency on Tuesday.

Fire Chief Dan Lemieux said he expects construction of the facility to be done some time in the spring.

Regional emergency services study unveiled

Recruitment and retention were the two stand out challenges identified in a study on regionalization of emergency services and emergency management which went public last week.

At last Wednesday’s public information session, emergency services personnel from communities in the region out numbered local residents in a crowd of about 50. All were in attendance to hear Barry Colledge of Morrison Hershfield outline the findings of the study.
