CRB approves MDP amendments

One of the last remaining hurdles for the City of St. Albert in adding more land for light industrial development was cleared last week.
The Capital Region Board approved amendments to the City’s Municipal Development Plan at their meeting on Thursday, Dec. 13, clearing the way for city council to continue with a public hearing and possibly pass the amendments in late January.

Always get real estate details in writing

There is a reason why real estate deals have to be in writing. Things said, but not written down, are open to interpretation and misunderstanding later as a decade old case in Brampton illustrates.

In this instance, the discussions meant the end of a real estate contract and eight years of court battles.

In August 2000, Tony Rizzuto put in an offer on a 32-acre farm in Brampton. He offered the owners, Jennifer Footman and her husband, $1.7 million based on a price of $52,000 per acre. The Footmans rejected the offer, signing it back for $65,000 per acre for a total price of 2.1 million, plus the right to remain living there rent-free for three years after closing.

Edmonton property tax hike looks like 2.5% — for now

EDMONTON – Edmonton residents are looking at a 2.5-per-cent property tax hike next year if councillors approve all the proposed budget amendments.

This would see the typical homeowners pay an extra $44 in 2013.

While that’s less than half the 5.5-per-cent increase, or $98 average, recommended when the budget was released last month, don’t celebrate yet — some amendments are contradictory and many are unlikely to pass.
