Australian gas giant eyes partnerships in Canada

Woodside Petroleum Ltd., Australia’s second-biggest oil producer, said it’s in talks with companies for a potential partnership to enter Canada’s natural gas industry to tap rising Asian demand.

“It’s natural in an area that has the sort of hydrocarbon resource that Canada does that Woodside is in there talking to people,” Chief Executive Officer Peter Coleman said Thursday in an interview in Sydney, declining to name any companies.

Australia to rival Saudi Arabia in oil reserves?

An Australian company claims it has found an untapped shale oil field with estimated reserves that could potentially put the country next to remarkably oil-rich Saudi Arabia. Still, extracting the discovered treasure poses a huge technical challenge.

Brisbane-based company Linc Energy has presented two estimates by respected independent consultants claiming that drilling and seismic exploration they do in South Australia has brought the prize they have been dreaming of for years – a potentially huge untapped shale oil deposit.

For clues to Canada’s housing future, look to Australia

Let’s put aside, just for a minute, the idea that there is a housing bubble in Canada.

It there is a housing bubble, then we know it will burst at some point, and that the fallout will be singularly unpleasant. New coal mine proposed for Crowsnest Pass

Calgary – Coal mining may be coming back to the Crowsnest Pass, due to an Australian company’s desire to tap into Asia’s growing hunger for steel.

Riversdale Resources, a public unlisted company based in Sydney, announced Monday it has entered into an agreement to acquire a portfolio of coal assets from Devon Energy and Consol Energy for $49.5 million U.S.
