EDMONTON – The city released new sketches Thursday of a possible $5-million beach at Hawrelak Park and said construction could start as early as this fall.
Consultants with Stantec proposed a shallow wading area and sandy area between the existing lake and the main parking lot. The feature would include boardwalk, outdoor showers and lockers, and lots of space for picnic tables, umbrellas and sunbathers.

The Town of Sylvan Lake plans to explore the feasibility of dredging up a beach to replace the sand lost to high water levels.
Graders were regularly used in the 1980s to scrape sand up into a beach, but stiffer environmental regulations ended the practice.

Parkland County council denied an application to rezone Allan Beach in order to allow for a 167 unit RV seasonal development on Oct. 23.
Division 5 councilor Denise Locher and Div. 6 coun. Tracey Melynk voted in favour of the proposed development with the remainder of council in opposition.

Opposition was out in full force to an application to amend a bylaw that would allow construction of a private, seasonal recreational community at Allan Beach during a public hearing at Parkland County on Oct. 9.
Nearly 100 residents of the area surrounding Allan Beach overflowed into council chambers with 80 per cent expressing opposition over the proposed development.
