With birding adding millions of dollars to the international economy, one local biologist is hoping the Town of High River adopts his five-point ecotourism plan that could turn the community into an international birding destination.

Turning parts of the expansive Hughes and Mercer lands into a protected nature reserve will draw a steady flow of “well-heeled” birders to High River –eager to grab a peek of a great Blue Heron or bald eagle – says a local biologist.
Greg Wagner, formerly with Alberta Environment, told town council Monday his plan to protect a swath of municipal-owned land in the north-end of High River could transform the community into an eco-tourism hotspot.
