China lumber, log imports roar back

SEATTLE, WA, Aug 10, 2013/ Troy Media/ – After a decline in importation of logs and lumber into China in 2012 and early 2013, the country came back roaring in the 2Q/13 with the import value increasing by more than 30 per cent year-over-year. The total value of imported softwood logs and lumber was over $2.2 billion in the 2Q/13, an increase by almost $600 million from the previous quarter.

Alberta economic snapshot for March 9, 2013

CALGARY, AB, Mar. 9, 2013/ Troy Media/ – While economic growth has slowed a bit in Alberta, it doesn’t seem to be making a big impact within the labour market just yet. In February, the province added another 4,200 jobs, following a gain of 9,700 in January. Full-time positions (+11,700) were only partially offset by a drop in part-time positions (-7,500) last month.

Alberta economic snapshot for February 16, 2013

CALGARY, AB, Feb. 16, 2013/ Troy Media/ – The value of Alberta’s manufacturing shipments slid in December to $5.77 billion – a decrease of 4.5 per cent from the previous month (seasonally adjusted). After having levelled off in early 2012, manufacturing in the province eased lower in the final three months of the year.

Alberta economic snapshot for Jan. 12, 2013

CALGARY, AB, Jan. 12, 2013/ Troy Media/ – Both Canada and Alberta are trading economies — and that means there’s a lot riding on the value of our exports to the rest of the word.

In November, international exports from Alberta slipped a bit to $7.6 billion, down from $8.1 billion in October. For the entire Canadian economy, global exports were also down. According to Statistics Canada  “Exports declined to $37.5 billion, as prices were down 1.3 per cent. Exports of farm, fishing and intermediate food products as well as metal and non-metallic mineral products contributed the most to the overall decline.”

Alberta lumber prices rolling higher

CALGARY, AB, Nov. 28, 2012/ Troy Media/ – The footprint of the forestry industry in Alberta is often understated. Alberta’s lumber industry is the third most important in Canada, after B.C. and Quebec, but it’s often overshadowed by the stupendous amount of economic activity generated by the energy and agriculture industries. The forestry industry was hit hard by the downturn, but lately it’s been showing signs of life.
