Chickens fly coop as bylaw officers close in

EDMONTON – Crystal Sherris will hide her five hens at one or two undisclosed Edmonton homes before city bylaw officers arrive Wednesday to seize them.

Sherris said she received a letter from the city warning her the officers would come by her Bonnie Doon-area home Jan. 23 to seize her backyard chickens, since a bylaw bans the birds from residential areas. Sherris won’t be home, and neither will her chickens, but Sherris said a friend might greet the officers in a surprise costume.

Airdrie councillors close in on approving comprehensive Community Standards bylaw

AIRDRIE – Council will take one final look at the proposed Community Standards Bylaw before it becomes law.

The comprehensive bylaw, which includes subsections related to Recreational Vehicle (RV) parking, snow removal, noise levels, and unsightly premises, among other things, passed second reading at council Monday night, and will be brought back for third and final reading at the next council meeting.

Resident pitches property tax cap

At an open house held on Oct. 9, Strathcona County council heard reasons for instituting limits on property tax increases and establishing performance measures.

Roger Simkin, a county resident since 1978, proposed two tools to control municipal spending, including creating a bylaw for limiting property tax increases and establishing performance measurements for every county department and program.

Fired-up residents crowd council chambers to protest pending Allan Beach development

Opposition was out in full force to an application to amend a bylaw that would allow construction of a private, seasonal recreational community at Allan Beach during a public hearing at Parkland County on Oct. 9.

Nearly 100 residents of the area surrounding Allan Beach overflowed into council chambers with 80 per cent expressing opposition over the proposed development.

Residents speak out about bylaw

AIRDRIE – Recreational vehicles and personal property rights were the two hottest topics at Monday night’s council meeting.

City of Airdrie Manager of Municipal Enforcement Darryl Poburan, along with members of Airdrie municipal enforcement, brought the comprehensive and controversial Community Standards bylaw to council Monday night for a public input session and final readings. As council fully expected, it was the RV portion of the bylaw that had most people in the gallery up in arms. Council eventually decided to table the bylaw until the first week of December.
