Province dedicated to GP projects: Redford

While Premier Alison Redford could not confirm whether Grande Prairie’s major infrastructure projects were safe in the upcoming budget, she did say the government is committed to infrastructure projects in the Swan City.

“We’re committed to investing in infrastructure – the schools, the hospitals – to make sure that communities like Grande Prairie are able to continue to grow and thrive,” said the premier during a brief media conference Wednesday.

Oil patch companies cautious as price pressures build

The latest quarterly results from some key oil patch companies show how pricing pressures are translating into cutbacks or flat growth in their expansion plans this year.

Precision Drilling Corp., for example, is planning $526-million in capital expenditures this year, half the $1.1-billion it budgeted for in 2012.

Rewards and challenges ahead in 2013

As another year closes and a new year begins there are certainly some much anticipated rewards and some expected challenges ahead in 2013.

A modernization project at Picture Butte High School has been on the go for so long that students and staff are now refusing to even guess when it will actually be completed. It will certainly be a reward for the Class of 2013 to see the project put to rest before they actually graduate.

It will also be nice for the community in general to finally see the major project completed.

Big ticket projects dominate “aggressive” capital plan

Devon’s 2013 capital budget was reviewed as part of the budget deliberations over the Nov. 23-24 weekend. Described as an “aggressive” budget, 2013 capital expenditures are scheduled to top out at $5,330,481, to be funded by a combination of cost-sharing, grants, town reserves and $1,093,500 in borrowing.

The capital budget was split into two distinct categories: new infrastructure, which looked at the development and expansion of several facilities and potential facilities, and repairs, maintenance and replacement.
