Low natural gas prices sink plan for carbon capture at Swan Hills Synfuels

EDMONTON – A $285-million plan to capture carbon at Swan Hills Synfuels has been scrapped.

The province and the company said Monday that low natural gas prices have undermined the business case for the production of synthetic gas, subsidized by the province’s Carbon Capture and Storage plan, or CCS.

Carbon-capture institute praises Alberta’s initiatives

EDMONTON- An international group has saluted Alberta’s support for carbon capture and storage, but said many more large projects are needed to control global warming over the next four decades.

The Australian-based Global CCS Institute released its 2012 status report Wednesday during its annual members meeting, which was held in Calgary this year.
