A boost to primary health care may be on the horizon for Peace River.
Last Tuesday (June 4) the Alberta government announced that Peace River is one of 24 communities in the province eligible to apply for a Family Care Clinic (FCC). The community was identified by the government as having a greater need for access to primary health care and is considered to have the capacity to sustain a FCC.

Medicine Hat was identified as one of 24 communities to benefit from a Family Care Clinic, in the government’s announcement on Tuesday, because the need is greatest for improved access to primary health care.
The City of Medicine Hat is on record with Alberta Health as having expressed an interest in seeing this take place.

Premier Alison Redford will announce a long-awaited new Calgary cancer clinic at a news conference Friday morning, government sources say.
The clinic will be on the site of the Foothills Medical Centre. It’s to be a multi-year project with planning to begin soon. Funds for the planning stage could be in the March 7 budget.

A Bariatric Specialty Clinic officially opened in Medicine Hat on Thursday providing support for those battling obesity, with a multi-pronged approach to suit individual needs.
“We use a team approach that recognizes there are many factors influencing an individual’s inability to maintain a healthy weight,” said Dr. Arya Sharma, Alberta Health Services medical director for the provincial obesity program. “Beating obesity is not simply about exercise and how much food you eat.”
