On track to promote economic development in county

For Martin Ebel, joining the County of Lethbridge staff as the new economic development officer provides him with a new career challenge.

It is also a first for the county which previously partnered with the City of Lethbridge through Economic Development Lethbridge. When county council voted in favour of hiring its own economic development officer, the hiring process led to Ebel joining the staff.

Study highlights county, city development differences

The city’s community growth committee got its first look at a study comparing the development costs between the city and the county.

“What it talks about is if you were to do a development in the city and do an equivalent development in the county, what’s the difference?” said Dave McRae project manager with ISL Engineering and Land Services Ltd.

No further cuts for county mill rate

Sturgeon County council shot down Coun. David Kluthe’s plan to put an unexpected surplus into tax cuts this week, with one councillor comparing his idea to former premier Ralph Klein’s “Ralph Bucks.”

Council voted 4-3 in favour of its 2013 taxation rates Tuesday. Mayor Don Rigney and councillors David Kluthe and Don McGeachy were opposed.

City of GP to apply for annexation

The City of Grande Prairie will be submitting its annexation application to the Municipal Government Board by the end of June, despite the fact there are still outstanding issues with County of Grande Prairie.

City and county agreed to do mediated meetings earlier this year after stalling out with regular negotiation talks regarding the 6,300-hectare annexation. The municipalities met six times between January to March.

Sturgeon County tax law scuttled

County residents may pay a little less come tax time this year due to an unexpected jump in inflation – if county council ever passes its mill rate, that is.

Council voted 3-2 against first reading of its 2013 taxation rates bylaw Tuesday. Councillors Tom Flynn and Joe Milligan were in favour, while David Kluthe, Don McGeachy and Mayor Don Rigney were opposed.
