Generation Y And Home Ownership: A Generation Of Renters, But Not By Choice

Sociologists couldn’t do better than Bram Warshafsky, 23, as a model for the attitude shift toward home ownership that they have long predicted for his generation.

Raised in a four-bedroom house in an upper-middle-class neighbourhood in midtown Toronto, Warshafsky, the second of four boys, appreciated having enough space in the backyard to play catch. But after he finished his commerce degree at Queen’s University in 2010, moved back in with his parents and landed a job with Johnson & Johnson’s marketing division, he couldn’t justify a jump into the real estate market. He has since become what he describes as a “passionate renter.”

Retiring oilpatch workers leave void

CALGARY – No matter how many talented young people flock to Canada’s oil patch, the tremendous wealth of experience being lost from the hordes of Baby Boomers set to retire in the coming years can never be fully replaced.

It is a minor issue within the larger problem of a growing labour crunch, though it is arguably a far greater cause for concern.

County demographic getting older

An update on Strathcona County living was recently presented to the Sherwood Park and District Chamber of Commerce, and it seems the county is growing bigger and getting older.

A recent presentation by Gerry Gabinet, director of Strathcona County Economic Development and Tourism, outlined the local state of real estate, as well as local demographics.
