New district approved for downtown

New buildings in St. Albert’s downtown will now be subject to minimum height restrictions and a range of permitted and discretionary uses on the ground floor, much to the displeasure of the St. Albert Taxpayers Association.

The group turned out in force for the continuation of a public hearing Monday night on a pair of motions that move the downtown area redevelopment plan (DARP) forward. One motion changes the land use bylaw to bring it into conformance with DARP while a second created a new land use district — downtown district — for the entire downtown.

Wanted: Improvements to the trail

When Murray Barker goes shopping, he ignores the advertisements and looks for cars. Using a wheelchair to move around the city, Baker said many drivers are distracted looking at commercial signs, and don’t watch out for pedestrians.

Providing complimentary donuts and ballots, the St. Albert trail improvement plan committee set up its tables last Saturday to seek the public’s input. They met local business owners and shoppers at St. Albert Place to ask what they thought was necessary to improve the city’s busiest commercial district.
