Centrium set for ‘bigger’ things

The 2013 Memorial Cup was supposed to be both a foundational event in Red Deer’s centennial celebrations and a fitting way to christen an expanded Enmax Centrium.

That will not happen, with Saskatoon having been awarded the hockey championship, but with the additions to the rink unveiled on Thursday, the hope is that a future Memorial Cup will be just one of many major events that come to town.

Leduc County council briefs

After the Mad Hatter’s Musical Festival caused complaints from Leduc County residents and resulted in a hefty fine for organizers in August 2012, the county presented a proposed concert and special events bylaw in response to the incident to council during a meeting on Mar. 5.

Clarence Nelson, director of enforcement services, presented the bylaw to council.

Event Centre could break ground in 8 months

After eight years of talking about a new Event Centre the City of Medicine Hat could break ground on the project in eight months’ time.
On Monday night city council agreed to ratify an agreement with the Box Springs Business Park on a land gift and servicing costs to place a proposed Event Centre on commercial development in the city’s northwest.
Today and Thursday, city staff members will go through proposals from a short list of four companies that answered a call for designs of the proposed 6,500-seat spectator arena that the alderman in charge of steering the project says will cost no more than $61.5 million.

Aldermen debate paying cash for Event Centre

Another $15 million of Medicine Hat’s Community Capital Reserve Fund should be earmarked for the construction of a large spectator arena, the City’s Corporate Service Committee recommended on Wednesday.

The final approval rests with city council, and while the item is simply an accounting matter – no funds are being spent, or removed from their interest-bearing accounts – the overall issue of how the final cost of an Event Centre will be paid and the City’s debt situation was raised in the committee meeting.
