Resident furious over flooded basement

An Okotoks resident is cleaning up soaked boxes and damaged walls after his basement flooded when a drain on a small pathway next to his townhome was clogged by ice.

The problem started when snow on the short path next to Shawn Clements’ home on Elm Place was not cleared and eventually froze, blocking a drain. When temperatures rose, water from melting snow ended up flowing down Clements’ driveway into his basement.

County wants river study

Mountain View County wants the province to update its flood assessment of the Red Deer River so decisions can be made on how best to ward against a future disaster.

Municipal officials met last month with Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development staff and emphasized the need to take another look at the river, which hasn’t been assessed for many years.
