Fort McMurray: More Than Meets the Eye

There is a lot more to Fort McMurray than mobile workers and oil sands. The city, which is located in the northeastern region of Alberta some 450 kms from the province’s capital city of Edmonton, is often kindly referred to as ‘Alberta’s Northern Light’. Those who have experienced Fort McMurray may also have experienced the Aurora Borealis, or northern lights, for which the town is nicknamed.

Fort McKay objects to Dover project

Usually praised for its positive working relationship with Alberta’s energy companies, the Fort McKay First Nation has filed a formal objection against a proposed oilsands project.

Regulatory hearings for the venture, a Dover project run by Athabasca Oil Corp. and PetroChina Co. Ltd., began Tuesday at MacDonald Island Park, after the band voiced concerns that the project could destroy pristine wilderness within territory traditionally used for hunting, fishing and other cultural uses.

Budget 2013 approved in Fort

Fort Saskatchewan city council unanimously passed a final approval of the 2013 budget at the Dec. 11 meeting, accounting for more than $77.8 million.

The budget recommendation put forward to council by city administration for 2013 includes an operating budget of $41.1 million, a capital budget of $25.9 million, a utility budget of $11.5 million and a budget for the Fort Saskatchewan Public Library of $973,150.
