Spontaneous carpooling: Calgary’s new city planning chief suggests hitchhiking as a ‘grassroots solution’ to city’s gridlock

Calgary’s new city planning chief is making an early splash with a suggested fix for the booming city’s gridlock: hitchhiking.

Not regular hitchhiking, but one in which riders assemble near High Occupancy Vehicle lanes. Passing motorists can pick them up and use the faster lanes, and riders don’t pay the drivers, as both receive a mutual benefit.
