Mayor Nolan Crouse is the chair of the Capital Region Board, which pushes the communities around Edmonton to increase their population densities, meaning the number of dwelling units built in a given hectare.

Proposed development for Malmo sparks community concern

EDMONTON- Almost seven years after the city approved a Malmo Plains seniors’ project, the community is fighting a new development proposed for the site that would be twice as big.

Westcorp Developments Inc. was allowed, despite strong local opposition in January 2006, to build a 250-unit complex, including a 16-storey apartment tower, on a 2.5-hectare property near 51st Avenue and 117th Street.

Residents want to douse fire prevention proposals

Opponents of plans to log as much as 675 hectares of forest intended to reduce the wildfire risk in the Bragg Creek area told the provincial government to go back to the drawing board at a meeting held last week.

At a meeting at the Bragg Creek Centre on Sept. 25 Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resources Minister Diana McQueen unveiled three logging options in the Kananaskis area intended as a means of fire prevention. However, a large part of the more than 300 people in attendance panned the options calling them nothing more than a smokescreen to allow clear-cut logging.
