Roadwork scaled back for both highways leading north to Fort McMurray

New passing lanes and other improvements for Highway 881 were postponed in the provincial budget and improvements on nearby Highway 63 have been scaled back.

Thursday’s budget still contains a commitment to finish twinning Highway 63 between Edmonton and Fort McMurray by the fall of 2016, but about $228-million worth of other improvements are off the table.

Province announces tenders for Highway 63 projects

Hot on the trail of recently opening 36 km of newly twinned highway, the Government of Alberta is issuing tenders for two new Highway 63 grading projects to kick start the accelerated twinning.

Grading for the next section of twinning will take place in two zones; the first extends 15 km from north of Mariana Lake to north of Algar Tower and is expected to be complete by fall 2013, weather permitting.

Vast stretch of Highway 63 to be twinned in four years, cabinet minister promises

WANDERING RIVER —Alberta’s transportation minister promised Friday the province will twin a 240-kilometre stretch of Highway 63 by the fall of 2016, saying the government will borrow at least some of the estimated $778 million to fast-track the project.
