High River Cancer Centre expansion has green light

Expansion plans for a foothills cancer centre serving more than 100 patients a month will proceed despite an announcement for a new $1 billion cancer clinic for Calgary.

Lise Brisebois-Blouin, Alberta Health Services (AHS) director of central community rural health in the Calgary zone, said the consensus among AHS representatives during a meeting on March 6 was the High River Cancer Centre in the High River Hospital remains an important part of health care in southern Alberta.

Local emergency room visits significantly decreased despite area population increase

Despite a rapidly increasing population base in the tri-area, Westview Health Center has managed to cut-down the amount of emergency visits received since 2008. In a presentation on hospital operations and geographical statistics at Parkland County earlier this week, Westview executive director, Ellen Billay said although this is a positive development there needs to be a continued focus placed on long-term health care sustainability.

“Westview has earned the respect and recognition in the community where people know they can address all of their health needs,” she said.
