A St. Paul, Alta. man, fighting for more than four years to get his new home fixed, is calling for tighter rules around builders and new home warranties.

Permits were issued for 11 new homes last month, bringing the year’s total to 94 starts, according to figures released by the town.
The total value of construction permitted in December was just over $2.7 million which was about half of the same month in 2011.

Future buyers of newly built homes got an early Christmas present of sorts with the passing of Bill 5 earlier this week in the Alberta legislature.
The bill, known as the New Home Buyer Protection Act, mandates mandatory warranties on all new homes built in Alberta, effective fall 2013.
