U.S. needs Canada’s oil as its own output rises: IEA

The United States will still need to import crude as production from the Bakken and other domestic shale oil regions rises, and Canada is a big potential source of such supplies, the International Energy Agency’s chief economist said on Monday.

However, Canada should keep pursuing Asia as the next major market for its growing supplies of oil sands-derived crude, the IEA’s Fatih Birol said.

County GDP numbers out

Stats Canada has released numbers that indicate that Strathcona County currently accounts for approximately nine per cent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) around Metro Edmonton.

According to Gerry Gabinet, manager of Strathcona County Economic Development and Tourism, numbers have been provided for Edmonton, as well as 23 adjacent communities that account for a total of approximately 23 per cent of the national GDP, estimated at approximately $4.85 billion.
