Lois Hole pedway still a long way away

The province has agreed to fund construction of a fence along Ray Gibbon Drive, a structure critics say may make it tougher to get into Lois Hole Park.

Mayor Nolan Crouse received a letter from Alberta Transportation Minister Ric McIver earlier this month about Lois Hole Centennial Provincial Park. St. Albert had been lobbying for provincial support to build a pedway over Ray Gibbon Drive.

Overpass construction won’t bother nearby business owners

Business owners near the intersection of Dunmore Road and the Trans-Canada say that short-term pain while an overpass is being built will alleviate long-term strain on the roads near their businesses as well as ease the nerves of drivers trying to get through the busy intersection.

On Friday, the News received confirmation that the contract for the project had been awarded to South Rock Ltd., a local-based roadbuilder. The contract, worth $18.5 million, includes a weather- dependent completion date of Aug. 31, 2014.

It’s the result of long-term lobbying on behalf of the City of Medicine Hat and the local Chamber of Commerce.

Dunmore overpass tender awarded

Local road building company South Rock Ltd. has won the contract to build the overpass at Dunmore Road and the Trans-Canada Highway, according to officials with Alberta Transportation, who say the new interchange will be operational by the fall of 2014.

“It’ll be a good project for next summer for sure,” Floyd Forbes, the project manager for South Rock, told the News on Friday.

“There’s such a shortage of road construction work next summer, we’re happy to have it.”

County looks into twinning Hwy. 15

The Countyof Strathcona is drawing up plans to twin Highway 15 from Range Road 220 to Range Road 210 as part of the Capital Region Transportation Master plan for the area.

The county’s highway study, which wrapped up its third open house in the region last Wednesday evening, will advocate closing three current intersections, building a railway overpass, and constructing the eastbound two-lane portion of the highway by using land immediately south of the current roadway.
