Wood pellets could warm NWT communities while creating jobs

EDMONTON – Hay River businessman Brad Mapes hopes barges full of wood pellets will be moving down the Mackenzie River in a couple of years, wintering over in places like Inuvik and becoming riverside warehouses for fuel.

In communities that now burn expensive diesel or propane, the pellets will mean savings of up to 50 per cent in fuel bills. And further south, the dozens of jobs created in harvesting the timber and processing it into pellets could help turn around the economy in settlements with virtually no employment opportunities.
