Council bats down bid to streamline permit process

FORT SASKATCHEWAN – The city’s planning and development department wants a little more free reign on granting developer approvals, but council wants to keep them on a short lease.

That was the upshot of a bylaw proposed by the department to create a new subdivision authority that failed to make it over the final hurdle.

The proposed bylaw would allow the department to grant subdivision approvals to developers, as long as the projects stay within  zoning restrictions set by council.

Clayton Kittlitz, city director of planning, said adopting the bylaw would streamline the permit process and avoid situations where projects stall while awaiting a date to be brought to council’s agenda.
