City looks to four companies for downtown arena proposals

The municipality is looking for a long-time dance partner on its new downtown arena.

The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo released a request for proposals today from a shortlist of four consortiums it think can finance and operate the new Sports and Entertainment Centre for the next 40 years. The arena, attached retail and ancillary development forms a centrepiece of the City Centre redevelopment plan.

Pipelines are to a landlocked oil economy what supply lines are to invading armies: critical to success but vulnerable to attack.

Canada’s prairie oil producers – led by Alberta but including Saskatchewan and now Manitoba – have been wildly favoured in geology but less so in geography. While the provinces are enjoying a boom in production from oil sands and new light oil prospects, they are located far from the massive refining hub on the U.S. Gulf Coast, and far from ocean ports that would allow them to reach energy-hungry customers overseas.

Council wary of subdivision proposals

Two subdivision plans were put forward to Fort Saskatchewan council at the Dec. 11 meeting, and although both saw passing of the first reading, both had issues brought to light.

Proposals were presented to city councillors in regards to the Forest Ridge and Sienna neighbourhoods, located in Westpark and South Park, respectively.

Comprised largely of townhomes measuring 20 feet wide and 36 feet high, the Forest Ridge project — presented first to council — was frowned upon by Mayor Gale Katchur.

“This is just such a change from where this was looking at,” she said. “There are just so many issues.”

Alberta tax watchdog slams Calgary’s call for more tax powers

City officials are pursuing dramatically greater taxation powers that would include civic levies on such things as the GST, alcohol, tobacco and hotels.

In a document procured by taxpayers’ rights advocates, administrators with the City of Calgary suggest seeking a greater share of existing levies from the province — such as those from gasoline — and the right to create new ones that would total 15 changes to tax policy.
