Ring road deal ‘a day that many people in Calgary thought would never come’

With strong backing from Tsuu T’ina Nation for a deal that includes $340 million in cash and a land swap, the province is set to stomp the accelerator on Calgary’s southwest ring road — a multibillion-dollar project through the reserve that would finally complete the sprawling loop around the city.

Calgary Airport Authority open to looking at connecting Airport Trail to ring road

Calgary Airport Authority’s CEO said he’s open to easing a rule that would dead-end the Airport Trail and tunnel extension before Metis Trail once that $295-million roadway opens next year.

The airport agreed the city could cut a tunnel road beneath its new runway, but only on condition that the road end at the small 36th Street N.E. when it opens.

Newly elected Tsuu T’ina Chief will hold the course on ring road negotiations (with video)

Calgarians shouldn’t expect any major change in direction on ring road negotiations from the newly elected chief of the Tsuu T’ina Nation.

In his first media appearance since winning a close election earlier this week, Chief Roy Whitney said he had no intention to disrupt ongoing negotiations with the province over the “elephant in the room” — the southwest leg of the ring road.

Province prepares ring road pitch to newly elected Tsuu T’ina chief

CALGARY — Alberta’s transportation minister is already making plans to sit down with the newly-elected chief of the Tsuu T’ina Nation, hoping to start laying the ground work for a new ring road deal.

Ric McIver, MLA for Calgary-Hays, says in the next few weeks he will call to schedule a meeting with Chief Roy Whitney, who defeated sitting chief Sandford Big Plume in Tsuu T’ina council elections Monday.

Millions spent on ring road

Construction crews continue to work on the estimated $120-million first phase of Red Deer’s ring road.

When completed in 30 years, the eventual six-lane expressway will align Hwy 11A, Northland Drive, 20th Avenue and McKenzie Road.

The estimated final price tag for the completed roadway with interchanges is roughly $500 million.
