In early 2007, when the Celtic Tiger was still roaring, Ivan Hearty had more job offers than he could handle.

Less than two years later, his country’s economy had collapsed and the young engineer from Dundalk — a large town midway between Dublin and Belfast — joined the ranks of thousands of freshly laid off Irish casting about for a fresh start.
