City to assess need for mid-sized soccer stadium

EDMONTON – The city will spend the next year determining if Edmonton needs a 10,000- to 15,000-seat stadium for soccer and other events.

FC Edmonton plans to use bleachers to expand Clarke Stadium to 5,000 seats this year from the current 1,500, and president Tom Fath said Monday the move will be a good indication of whether a larger facility is required.

Scotiabank Saddledome ranks101st in list of world’s busiest stadiums — and fifth in Canada

In this battle of Alberta, Edmonton is the star of the show.

In a Pollstar ranking of the top 200 arena venues in terms of show ticket sales between Jan. 1, 2012 and Dec. 31, 2012, Edmonton’s Rexall Place landed in the 26th spot with 375,192 compared to Calgary’s Scotiabank Saddledome in 101st spot with 122,110.
