Edmonton ties green strings to new suburban lot sales

EDMONTON – The City of Edmonton is selling 40 residential lots, but with strings attached.

Anyone who wants to build on these lots in the new Oxford neighbourhood, has to post a $10,000 guarantee up front and commit to reaching an energy efficiency rating of at least 78 on Canada’s EnerGuide system.

Another 40 homes will be built to the same standard by four certified home building companies.

Debate on suburban-style garages in mature neighbourhoods put over until January

Community leagues and activists will have more time to collect their thoughts and lobby council after a series of contentious changes to the mature neighbourhood overlay were postponed Monday.

The Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues sent out an alert Sept. 17 after they saw the proposed changes, which they argue would make it easier for developers to build homes with large, suburban style front garages in mature neighbourhoods.

Proposed rules for big box shopping malls face heat

CALGARY— Developers and major retail chains are giving a rough reception to city proposals for new shopping centre design standards.

City planners have tested out proposed rules that would appear to make future Calgarybig-box complexes look vastly different from the normal suburban style, with less space for parking lots, more for pedestrians and more attractive streetscapes.
