It’s been closed for 28 years. But the city is still spending money on an old garbage dump site near the end of Stafford Drive. Landfill gas emissions and leachate are an ongoing issue, and city council agreed Tuesday to award a contract for nearly $550,000 in an attempt to reduce environmental concerns there.

Town officials are warning Okotoks homeowners they will see a higher property tax bill this spring and the blame lies squarely with the 2013 provincial budget unveiled last week.
As part of the budget the provincial government is eliminating a program intended to soften the impact of high property values on education taxes. Okotoks was one of 11 Alberta communities covered by the program and according to the Town cutting the program means the education portion of municipal property taxes is going to jump this year.

The deal to build a new arena for the Edmonton Oilers collapsed Wednesday, with city councillors pointing the finger of blame at Oilers owner Daryl Katz and his last-minute demands for millions more in taxpayers money.
Stephen Mandel said it was time to send a message.
“It’s wrong to hold us up for ransom,” said Mandel.
