A partnership with the Canadian Home Builders’ Association could help Lethbridge College realize up to $1 million in funding for the Trades Building renewal project.

CHBA members didn’t hesitate to sign on to the project which will see the profits from the sales of two new homes each year for five years go into the Trades and Technology Renewal and Innovation Project (TTRIP).

EI changes may increase skilled labour migration to west

Local employers are hiring, forum told

“We’re hiring!”

That was the message Tuesday, as local employers spoke during an Alberta Works Week forum in Lethbridge.

And many are looking for long-term employees with trades skills, reports Alberta Works co-ordinator Bryon Anderson.

“There are a lot of jobs available for people who are trades certified,” says Anderson, a business and industry liaison officer at the Lethbridge centre.

Trades Alberta: Bold approach helps northern Alberta welding shop thrive

EDMONTON – One of the first things that stands out about Hell ‘N’ Back Industries, a welding and manufacturing shop located in the northern Alberta village of Nampa, is the company’s logo.

It’s on the sign outside the 2,415-square-metre shop, located south of Peace River. Inspired by pin-up and Second World War bomber art, the logo shows a scantily clad woman with a devil’s tail, bright red lipstick visible behind her lifted welding mask.

Trades Alberta: Partnership in Fort McMurray expedites heavy-equipment technician training

EDMONTON – The first cohort of students in a new heavy-equipment diploma program offered through Fort McMurray’s Keyano College is set to graduate in October.

The FINNtech heavy-equipment technician diploma launched in February 2012 in partnership with Finning, the world’s largest dealership of Caterpillar equipment.

Oilsands trades winners in federal budget: MP

The federal budget is shifting its support behind trades programs to drive Canada’s economy, encouraging the private sector to play a bigger role in recruiting workers and training unemployed workers for in-demand jobs.

Fort McMurray-Athabasca MP Brian Jean says the oilsands will be one of the top benefactors of this program.

Trades Alberta: Overseas search for skilled tradespeople both rewarding and challenging for Alberta companies

EDMONTON – Temporary foreign workers have been described as a Band-Aid solution to Alberta’s ongoing labour challenge.

But a projected shortage of 114,000 skilled workers in Alberta through to 2021 has convinced some employers it is necessary to conduct searches for skilled tradespeople outside Canada, in conjunction with other strategies.
