More changes may soon be coming to Canada’s railway system after the devastating derailment in Lac-Megantic, Que., in early July.
Currently anything that can be transported on the highway can be transported by rail including grains, chemicals, crude oil and hazardous goods.

I am impressed by soaring oil production in the US, which rose to a new cyclical high of 7.3mbd in mid-May. This output boosts industrial production. It also has been a windfall for the railroad industry where weekly car loadings of petroleum and chemical products has soared 41% over the past four years to a record high of 43,085 units in mid-May. That activity is helping to stoke the forward earnings of the S&P 500 Railroads into record territory.

EDMONTON – A city proposal to spend as much as $50 million shaving one minute off a future LRT trip downtown from St. Albert is “ridiculous,” Coun. Dave Loken said Wednesday.
Staff studying concepts for the northwest LRT route are looking at making a suburban-style stretch along 153rd Avenue west of Castle Downs Road, where trains could go up to 70 km/h instead of 50 km/h.

CALGARY — Cenovus Energy Inc. says some of its oilsands bitumen may soon be able to move to market by rail, adding to the roughly 6,000 barrels per day of conventional crude it is currently shipping by train.
