Central Alberta jobless rate surges in March

The local jobless rate surged 1.5 percentage points in March, according to Statistics Canada’s latest figures.

Unemployment in the Red Deer region was estimated at 5.9 per cent last month, up from 4.4 per cent in February and 5.4 per cent in March 2012. The number was the highest of Alberta’s eight regions, with Calgary next at 5.1 per cent, followed by Lethbridge-Medicine Hat (4.8 per cent), Edmonton (4.4 per cent), Banff-Jasper-Rocky Mountain House (4.3 per cent), Wood Buffalo-Cold Lake and Athabasca-Grande Prairie (tied at 4.1 per cent), and Camrose-Drumheller (2.8 per cent).

U.S. jobless rate drops to 7.6% as workers give up looking

U.S. employers added just 88,000 jobs in March, the fewest in nine months and a sharp retreat after a period of strong hiring. The slowdown may signal that the economy is heading into a weak spring.

The Labor Department said Friday that the unemployment rate dipped to 7.6 per cent, the lowest in four years, from 7.7 per cent. But the rate fell only because more people stopped looking for work. People who are out of work are no longer counted as unemployed once they stop looking for a job.

Alberta unemployment rate of 4.5% second lowest in Canada

CALGARY — Alberta’s unemployment rate remained unchanged in January at 4.5 per cent, second lowest in the country behind Saskatchewan’s 4.0 per cent, according to Statistics Canada.

The federal agency reported Friday that Alberta saw an employment gain of 9,700 positions from December, up 0.4 per cent. On a year-over-year basis, employment in the province has grown by 1.9 per cent or 41,100 positions.

Lethbridge region experiences largest unemployment drop in Alberta

Alberta Human Services recently released their Monthly Labour Force Bulletin for the Lethbridge–Medicine Hat region. The region saw a drop of nearly a full percentage point, the largest drop in unemployment in the province.

Unemployment in Southern Alberta was at 5.1% in October 2012, but that dropped to 4.2% last month.For reference, it was slightly lower at 4.1% at the same time last year.

Job vacancy rate highest in Alberta

CALGARY — Alberta has the highest job vacancy rate in the country, according to the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, and that is translating into close to 55,000 unfilled private sector jobs. The CFIB said Tuesday that as Canada’s labour markets continue to recover from the 2008-2009 recession, the percentage of unfilled private sector jobs increased slightly from 2.3 per cent in the second quarter to 2.4 per cent in the July-to-September period.
