Residents launch effort to preserve Big Island/Woodbend wilderness

EDMONTON – Walk the lip of the sand dune in Woodbend on the first day after spring winds blow away the snow and you’ll find arrowheads, says naturalist Charles Richmond.

It’s a spot deep in the deep southwest corner of Edmonton — a dune blowout nearly the size of a football field — and connected to more than 400 hectares of mostly wilderness, said Richmond, a naturalist with the Sierra Club.
