The Holt government’s promise to cap residential rent increases at three per cent per year might seem like a lifeline for New Brunswick tenants. With rent for a typical two-bedroom unit up more than 40 per cent since the pandemic, many are struggling to make ends meet. But in fact, rent control will likely exacerbate the root cause of the province’s rental affordability woes—namely, a shortage of rental units. And renters will suffer the consequences.
