Alberta has a long history of welcoming international migrants. Waves of permanent settlers—much of them from war-torn Europe in the early 1900s—helped establish a growing population base on the Prairies a century ago. The situation in 2016 is a bit different, however. Today, non-permanent residents have been the primary driver of international guests living in Alberta.
