Coaldale offering tax haven to lure new businesses

CALGARY— The southern Alberta town of Coaldale is dangling three years of tax-free operation to businesses that break ground in 2013 in a bid to promote commercial growth.

Mayor Kim Craig described the offer as a “kick in the wallet,” as the global financial meltdown of 2008 stalled budding developments in town. One of the town’s main commercial developers went belly up and new businesses haven’t taken off since.
