Shortage of trades workers in Fort McMurray as Alberta apprenticeship enrolment drops

Enrolment in apprenticeship programs across the province has dropped over the past five years and the shortage of available trades workers is noticeable in the Fort McMurray region where oil prices are up and employers are looking to fill positions.

RMWB offers rebates for homeowners who complete FireSmart recommendations

The municipality is offering rebates to homeowners who get a FireSmart home assessment and complete the recommended work. The program has been created thanks to a $100,000 grant from Intact Public Entities and Intact Financial Corporation.

Council defers Hillview tax relief request to September

There is still plenty of uncertainty facing people living at the Hillview Condominiums in Abasand, a 42-building, 214-unit complex destroyed in the 2016 Horse River Wildfire that has undergone a costly rebuild.

Unemployment rates continue dropping in RMWB, Alberta and across Canada

Unemployment in the census region covering Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo continued dropping in June. Provincially, Alberta’s unemployment rate hit its lowest mark since 2015 and caught up to the national rate for the first time in seven years.

Council approves $5-million grant to help turn former downtown cinema into arts incubator

Arts Council Wood Buffalo (ACWB) is getting a $5-million grant to help turn the former Landmark Cinemas building in downtown Fort McMurray into a creative space for artists. The grant was approved unanimously by council at their Tuesday meeting.

Council discussing higher meter rate, rules for ride-sharing programs in proposed Vehicle for Hire Bylaw

Local unemployment hits 5.7 per cent as Alberta, national unemployment rate drops

The unemployment rate in the census region covering Wood Buffalo and Cold Lake was 5.7 per cent for May, according to data released by Statistics Canada. This is a slight increase from 5.6 per cent in April, but still down from 6.1 per cent in March.
