Local jobless rate falls by half a point in March

Unemployment in southern Alberta fell by half a percentage point in March, according to new numbers from Statistics Canada, which puts the rate in Medicine Hat-Lethbridge economic region at 6.7 per cent.

Energy officials seek $675K for Saamis Solar planning; Smith says industrial carbon pricing needed

The city’s energy division will seek $675,000 from council to advance planning work and analysis for the Saamis Solar Park project, but that work won’t be complete until the fall when other key factors in a final analysis on approving the project may be more clear.

Business fees went up for some, down for others

Changes to city licensing fees earlier this year raised costs for about 1,500 business owners, but fees fell for 1,900 others, while the licensing department still requires the general tax base to cover its costs, a city committee heard Thursday.

Biodiesel company that once planned facility near the Hat faces shareholder challenge

Cielo Waste Solutions, which shifted plans away from building a biodiesel refinery near Medicine Hat last year before changing course again this month, now faces a challenge from a major shareholder which wants to replace its entire board.

City report touts well abandonment, investments

The city has a much better handle on its well-abandonment program and a strong investment portfolio that earned nearly 15 per cent as stock markets rocketed toward the end of 2024, a city committee was told Tuesday.
