City hall is floating the idea of crafting four-year budgets instead of three-year spending plans, to prepare for Alberta’s shift to four-year council terms.
A longer spending plan would mean major civic spending decisions are made less frequently, but would carry more consequence.
Already, Calgary is one of Canada’s few jurisdictions that sets fixed budgets every three years. The system lets aldermen make usually modest adjustments in the second and third year of the spending plan.
