Alberta economic snapshot for February 23, 2013

CALGARY, AB, Feb. 23, 2013/ Troy Media/ – Maybe it was the hockey lockout, or maybe just the cold weather. Whatever the reason, Albertans seemed to be in little mood in December for one of their favourite pastimes: shopping.

According to Statistics Canada, total retail sales in the province slumped to $5.712 billion in the last month of 2012, a 2.5 per cent dip from November and the second consecutive decrease. Compared to December of the previous year, total sales are higher by 1.9 per cent. The figures are adjusted for seasonal variation, so any of the effects of Christmas shopping are accounted for.

CALGARY, AB, Feb. 2, 2013/ Troy Media/ – The sources of competition between the provinces range from hockey scores of local teams to the local weather conditions. But in at least one indicator, Alberta leaves the rest of its provincial siblings in the dust: average weekly earnings.

In November 2012, the average employee in Alberta earned $1,086 per week (before taxes and other payroll deductions). That’s a whopping 19.2 per cent above the national average of $911 per week, and even 15 per cent above the province with the second highest average earnings: Newfoundland and Labrador.

Albertans dine out far more than other Canadians

CALGARY, AB, Dec. 4, 2012/ Troy Media/ – Recent data on shopping habits reveal that Albertans spend more dollars per person than anywhere in the country. They also appear to be spending more on their second favourite activity: dining out.

In September, Albertans forked out $654 million on food in restaurants, bars, fast food outlets, and caterers. That topped the previous record high for the province set in July.
