Opinion: How to build a better Edmonton in 2024

In 2023, urban issues dominated local headlines. The Valley Line Southeast opened after a three-year delay. Edmonton’s new zoning bylaw passed 11-2 and attracted nearly 300 people to a five-day public hearing. Migration to Alberta surged, with 31,371 from international origins and 13,926 from other provinces. And of course, macro factors like inflation, rising interest rates, and labour shortages were top-of-mind. Above all, housing was in the hot seat.

Opinion: Golf courses aren’t a fair way to use Edmonton’s river valley

As Edmonton’s population continues to rise, the city council needs to optimize public land uses for a growing and diverse urban society. With 1,281 hectares of Edmonton’s land allocated to golf courses, we need to ask ourselves: Should the city preserve the 364 hectares of municipally owned courses, or reimagine these spaces to more effectively meet the needs of current and future Edmontonians?
