On Mar. 28, the Peace River town council met. A first reading of the 2111 ATCO Gas and Pipelines Ltd. Franchise Agreement Bylaw was carried. A ten year term at a franchise fee of 32% was accepted. This does not include property taxes.

Terry Websdale, director of Corporate Services and Economic Development, presented to the Peace River town council on Mar. 14 the Tax Penalty Cancellation Policy. This motion was carried.

The community of Peace River now has access to Rogers 5G networking. Rogers will also be collaborating with Shaw and will invest $2.5 billion towards the creation of more 5G networks. Another $1 billion will go towards a rural and Indigenous Connectivity Fund which will lead to higher access.

On Feb. 28, the Peace River town council discussed the Women in the North Conference and their grant request, presented by Sherry Crawford, business analyst of the organisation. The conference, put on annually for those residing in Peace River and the surrounding areas, discusses women in business, as well as networking and training.

Alberta’s new Transportation Minister, Rajan Sawhney has been touring the Peace Country the last couple of weeks in order to meet with stakeholders in various communities. Last week, Minister Sawhney had met with stakeholders in the Peace River, Alta. community and was able to view the new bridge that has recently been finished.

Peace River Community Health Centre will be receiving approximately $2 million that will be spent on renovations to medical device reprocessing (MDR) as well as upgrades. This funding is provided by the Alberta government’s Rural Health Facilities Revitalization Program.

Town of Peace River Council members held a regular council meeting on July 26, 2021. During this meeting an update was made to the Off-Site Levy Bylaw and Policy, a request to waive the penalty on income taxes was declined, and Council ratified a letter supporting a grant application by Mercer International Inc.

Throughout 2020, the Town of Peace River staff had worked through, scanned, and indexed all of the Town of Peace River’s bylaws archive. These archives dated back nearly 100 years. While working through the bylaws, it came to attention that several bylaws were identified as in need of review. This is in order to determine whether or not certain bylaws are still relevant or if they needed to be repealed.
