Edmonton basketball training centre a step closer after committee vote

EDMONTON – City councillors took a shot at making Edmonton the home of Canadian amateur basketball Monday when they recommended helping fund a consolidation of training at the Saville Community Sports Centre.

Members of council’s executive committee endorsed a proposal to spend $500,000 annually for four years so Canada Basketball would train nine of its 10 teams full-time in Edmonton.

Edmonton looking to become Canadian basketball training centre

EDMONTON – The city is considering a “rare opportunity” to lure almost all of Canada Basketball’s 10 teams to train at the Saville Community Sports Centre.

The proposed four-year deal would see the male and female 3-on-3, cadet, junior and development national teams train full-time at the University of Alberta South Campus facility, according to a city report released Thursday.
