SINGLE-DETACHED STARTS INCREASED IN JANUARY

Single-detached starts in Calgary for January increased 31 per cent compared to January 2012 said the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) in its Housing Now report.

“New single-detached construction in Calgary remains robust as new inventories and active listings in the competing resale market have declined and rental vacancies remain relatively low,” stated the report.

EAST-WEST DIVIDE IN CANADIAN HOUSING

While housing markets in Central Canada have “shown signs of fatigue over the past six months,” a new report from TD Economics said the Calgary market is experiencing “positive momentum”.

Detailing the vast differences in major markets coast to coast, the TD report singled out Calgary as “the lone shining star in Western Canada’s real estate market”.

Calgary Residential Statistics: February 2013

Total residential sales for the month of February 2013 totaled 1,711 units, a one per cent decline over the previous year. Accounting for the leap year in 2012, activity in the single family market resembles last year’s activity. However, even with one less day in the February 2013 figures, condominium sales have made significant gains increasing by 13 per cent relative to February 2012.

$252 Million Into Calgary Communities

Part of an ongoing community investment fund that will invest $252 million from 2012 to 2016, the second round of The City of Calgary’s 2012 Capital Conservation Grants saw over $1.6 million allocated to 46 community associations and social recreation organizations to support more than 80 projects around the city.

SURVEY AIMED AT IMPROVING CONDOMINIUM LIVING

The provincial government is asking Albertans to share their views on how to better legislate the development, purchase and operation of condominiums.

The Alberta government is conducting an online survey with an eye towards a possible amendment to the Condominium Property Act. The province says it wants to ensure the Condominium Property Act reflects the current needs of Albertans and addresses new trends in the condominium market.

Calgary repeat home sales see prices fall

CALGARY — House prices in Calgary for repeat home sales dipped slightly in January in line with a trend across the country.

The Teranet-National Bank National Composite House Price index, released Wednesday, said prices in Calgary were down 0.1 per cent from the previous month and nationally they were down 0.3 per cent, the fifth consecutive monthly decline.

RAISING A VILLAGE

East Village is on its way to becoming one of Calgary’s most sought after neighbourhoods.

“Starting this year it’s fast forward again, it hasn’t slowed down at all actually which is really great,” said Susan Veres, vice president marketing and communications for the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC).

“We finished the year last year (and) interest in the remaining parcels of land was really quite high so our focus last year and this year will be on commercial development, less on the multifamily side.”
